HEALTHIER TONE IN SOUTHERN MARKETS. (BY TKf.BGKAPH-PRKBB AHBOOI ATION .) CHRISTCHURCH. May 20. At the Canterbury markets, although there is little In the grain and produce trade to cause jubilation amongst growers, there is a decidedly healthier tone in the mercantile community. Wheat is little changed in demand for price. A fair amount has been bought at os 6d. a bushel on trucks for Tuscan, though the market has slackened down. For oats, the actual produce is difficult to get, and up to 3s 6d a bushel f.o.b. sacks in is available for lines ol A Cartons equal to 2s 7cl to 2s 8d on trucks. Algerians are somewhat firmer in sympathy with whites, and are worth up to 2s 2d on trucks. Chaff has firmed in sympathy with oats There is now quite a consumption on farms as a result of the pas-1 ture shortage and, at the values ruling for it, chaff is not a dear feed for stock. However, in addition to the offers by farmers, the North Island is also inquiring, and prices have appreciated to £3 15s a ton on trucks. Though there is very little quotable change in the value of potatoes, there is a slightly better tone in the market. “Prompts” have been sold at £4 5s a ton f.o.b. sacks in, and £4 12s 6d has been quoted for Junes’, with only an occasional response. The Kurow and Wingatui, which sailed for Auckland at the beginning of the week, took between them 5100 sacks of cocksfoot. Machine-dressed is quoted at to 9£d a pound equal, on average quality to 5Jd to 6d a lb on trucks.
