BIG CRICKET

LATE EDITION

VISITORS’ COLLAPSE.

’VARSITY’S WINNING STAND.

PROFITABLE PARTNERSHIPS

BY CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT. Received' 11.45 a.m. to-day. LONDON, May 20. ’Varsity’® winning stand later in the day only iserved to emphasise the surprise caused by the New Zealanders’ collapse in the morning. Although the wicket, to all appearance®, was quite good, the remaining six batsmen were disposed of in just over an hour for 54. The hopes that James and Dempster would stay till risk of defeat was averted were shattered in the second over from Cobbold, by Longrigg accepting a catch in the slips. When Merritt mined Dempster he played a safe game, while his partner met the bowling with the greatest confidence, but another promising partnership was broken bv an unlucky misunderstanding, which found both men in the middle of the pitch, and Cobbold had no difficulty in running Dempster out. He had five boundaries in his 44. Dawson and Longrigg, Cambridge’s first pair, made light of the visitors attack, and at the lunch adjournment were still in, with 66 np. In the afternoon, the former gave a brilliant , display, passing the century and hit- \ ting thirteen boundaries. He was out at 209, and Lowry then rested hais fast howlers, but Seabrook and Longfield could not be separated, and speedily wiped off the remaining runs. Cambridge won hv five wickets, and is considered to have one of the heist sides for years.
