THE SMILE CASTLE
THE CASTLE PLEDGE.
I promise to smile every time I can, and to chase all the frowns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant will kill them with his Magic Sword Happiness.
My Dear Smiles, — , Isn’t it perfectly wonderful to think that now we have four Smiles in England? The Smile Castle was first built for all the Smiles in and near Hawera, and it seems almost too good to be true to'feel that Hawera is drawing our dear old Motherland, nearer to us by means of her Smiles. ± m sure you are all so interested that you would like to hear stories about places and people in the United Kingdom; so if there is anything particular you would like to know about it just ask me in your letters, for I should just love to answer any wish of -my Smiles.. ... 1 T ' Two years ago when any overseas visitors went .to .London they always made a point of seeing Madame Tussaud. s. Madame Tussaud’s was the famous galleries of waxwork figures consisting of every famous and notorious person in the world. All the figures were life size and such faithful representations that I have known visitors step up an speak to them. Just inside the door was a big London policeman, all dressed* in full uniform, apparently quite ready to direct anyone in his sight-seeing. But imagine the horror and amazement when one discovers that he is really made of wax. All the figures are just as life-like—-so much so that this wonderful building has been one of London’s many attraction's for over one hundred years. People from all parts of the world gathered to \iew its wonders. .. . , , Two years ago a dreadful ■ catastrophe happened. Madame Tussaud’s was completely ruined by fire. Everyone mourned the loss of this place of interest, for it seemed as though London would never be complete without it. Now good news has come to us. The famous waxworks are to be remodelled, with many additions and improvements. It is hoped that they will be thrown open to the public before Christmas. Among the new figures will be a life-size and life-like figure of our Premier with all the other Premiers of the Dominions. The old “Chamber of Horrors,” which used to give one cold thrills down the back, will be called “The Dungeon of Horrors.” I think this is far more appropriate because the rooms that contain all these morbid and horrible sights are down steps like an underground cellar. I really suppose there will be many slight alterations, biit whatever they are we shall all be glad to welcome Madame Tussaud’s waxworks back again. I hope, Smiles, you will all one day be able to visit this remarkable and interesting place. Who is working at gifts for our Christmas gift cupboard? Its not too early to begin now, and its so jolly to have a definite object to work for in the winter; already a few beautiful articles have come in. We have such a wonderful band of Smiles that our cupboard should contain even more beautiful gifts than last year. Hoping you will all remember Empire Day and all that it means.
I am, always your loving SMILE QUEEN.
