DESCRIPTION OF THE PI/AY. Received 11.45 a.m. to-day. The weather wa® dull and cold, with rain threatening, when the match was resumed. Rain had fallen overnight, but the pitch wa® not .seriously affected. The New Zealand attack was shared bv Bernau and McGirr, but Blunt soon relieved the former, who later, fielding at mid-off, unfortunately missed Outmore when lie Iliad reached 26. At 96 Merritt took over the ball, but the bowling generally, with the exception of McGirr, wa® erratic. At lunch the total had reached four for 205, and on resuming Russell and Ashton scored so fast that 74 were added in forty minutes. The game then took a turn in the visitor®’ favour, as McGirr iii one over clean-bowled Russell and got Douglas and Morris caught in the slips. Both were superb catches by Dempster. Lowry, who i® not a regular bowler, went on himself and got O’Connor, whose 65 included nine fours. Rain suspended play for ten minutes.. lihe Ashton who is playing for Essex is Hubert, not Claude.
