Early on Sunday morning the Christchurch fife brigade answered three calls within six hours. At 2.12 a.m. they were called to a fire in a • five-roomed house in River Road, owned by Mr. John Wigg 'and occupied by Mr. P. J. Vincent. The fire originated in the dining-room, the contents of which were totally destroyed. Other parts of the house suffered from .smoke and water. At 8.00 an outbreak occurred in a fiveroomed house in Merivale. The brigade quelled this fire before any serious damage occurred.
