The Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. 0. J. Haw ken) leaves Wellington on Saturday for his constituency (states' our Wellington correspondent). He will give a political address at Eltham on Monday evening.

Mr J. Doolan, New Zealand Bailway Department, was in Bawera yesterday on official business. He was a guest at the White Hart Hotel.

Major and Mrs. Armstrong, who have been in charge of the Eltham Salvation Army Boys’ Home for the past three years have received notice of transfer and will be leaving to take a new appointment in about a month’s time.

Rev. Howard Elliott, who has been conducting a series of meetings in Taranaki under the auspices of the Protestant Political Association, left for Wellington by motor yesterday morning.

R Hetherington together with Mr Hetherington junr., and Miss Hetherington, of Sealake, Victoria, who are touring New Zealand, stayed last night at the Commercial hotel and left this morning lor iMt. Egmont. r* Dr. John Cairney, of Dunedin was appointed medical superintendent of the Ilawera Public Hospital at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday. Dr. Cairney was one of the three previously selected by the board from applications received whose names were submitted to the Director General of Health, who, in recommending the appointment quoted the opinions of Professor Gowland, of the Otago Medical School and Dr. Barnett, late professor of surgery in the Otago University as to the administrative as well as professional ability of Dr. Cairnev.

Eugene Smith, who served the Government Life Insurance Department as an outside representative for eleven years, and who has held the position of new business manager for the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia, Ltd., in both Wellington and Auckland for the past foui: and a half years, lias been appointed genera] manager of the Commonwealth General Assurance Corporation of Australia, head office Sydney. Mr Smith was resident in Hawera for several years when representing the Government office.
