AN INCIDENT IN COURT

There were .some tense moments during the hearing of an assault case in the Supreme Court, when a young woman, who was being cross-examined, became upset. She quivered in the witness box, and then in a hoarse, strained voice called,_ “Cur; you cur. you.” She was looking in the dire© t.ion of the prisoner’s dock at the time. A police constable who was near the box steadied the young woman, and a glass of water was brought for her. The witness was assisted out of the box by the matron, and was given a seat in the body of the court. Thu cross-examination was then proceeded with.
FINED FOR BETTING WITH
BOOKMAKER
CHRISTCHURCH., May 12. A second batch of cases, as the result of the recent raid on premises, or A. V. Whitta, who was convicted ol being a bookmaker, was heard to-day. Virtually all the defendants resided at some distance from the. city. One was a woman in Southland. Fines jwere imposed ranging from £2 to £ls for betting with a. bookmaker.
