INTERESTING DISPLAYS
Much good work was shown in the matches played yesterday, when City • beat Normanby at Hawer by a' good margin, and Fraser Road drew with Ohangai. The . weather conditions were excellent and the matches attracted a fair number ot’ spectators.
CITY (20) v. NORMANBY (3)
Normanby attacked' \ strongly after the kick-off and took play to their opponents’ quarters, where a keen struggle ensued. Goodwin relieved with a nice dash and passed to Clarke, and he to Townsend, and play centred. Back came the Whites, Peddie putting in a fine run and just failing to seore. Their forwards maintained the pressure, till Hart, Mclntyre and Wards came away and took play downfield, where Peddie stopped the rush with a good mark. Yellows once more attacked and in a loose rush went riglu to the opposing line, where from a lineout Hart took and dashed across. The kick failed. City 3, Normanby 0. Spurred by this reverse, Whites went upheld in a fine dash, Peddie again being prominent. Play went .up and headed a Normanby rush that kept downfield in good fast rushes. Tamu City defending till Hart relieved' with a good kick. ISTormanby continued to attack and just failed to cross the line, the forwards revelling in the 1005 e... Cannon saved and ;City centred till once more Normanby attacked, and from a penalty Toss kicked a pretty goal. City 3, Normanby 3. The visitors continued to press, and had generally the better of the play till half-time was called.
In the second spell, City opened out play and their backs showed capita' form. Lay made a good run and passed to Clarke, who almost got over. Continuing the attack City forwards headed by Hart went downfield, and Meßeth, taking well, scored a good try. No goal resulted. City 6, Normanby 3. Keeping up the pressure City backs gave Normanby a strenuous time, and the latter had hard work in keeping them out; only good work by Peddie, Jumbo and Toss saving scores. At length City forwards attacked and Cannon securing, went clear away and scored. City 9, Normanby 3. City backs, Lay, Clarke and Goodwin, especially prominent, kept on the attack and, with the forwards co-operating well, went down field, where, Walden speculating, gave them an opening, and Wards dashed through to seore, The kick failed again. City 12, Normanby 3 Having all the best of the play, City maintained a constant attack. Clarke showing up well in attacking movements. With his forwards in dose attendance, Clarke made a run and, eluding iall opposition, 'scored under the posts. He converted his try, and the score was: City 17, Normanby 3. Then Normanby set up a hot attack, but the defence was too strong, and City took play to the opposing quarters, where Mclntyre securing, made a fine run and scored. From this onwards play went up and downfield in loose rushes, but neither side could score, and the match ended:. City 20 Normanby 3
FRASER ROAD (3) v. OHANGAI. (3)
A closely contested match between Fraser Road and Ohangai resulted in a draw, each scoring a try. Play throughout was fast and much good play was seen.
Fraser Road attacked from the outset, and from a penalty had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Then Ohangai .■went upheld and the Road forced. The Ohangai backs got to work and after a good rush Phillips secured and got over the line, Lee failing with the kick. Ohangai 3, Fraser Road 0. The Road forwards set up a series of hot attacks in the second spelt and had Ohangai defending strenuously, Neweli and Whareaitu being specially prominent. Ohangai rallied and carried play to Road territory, but once more the Road set up a hot attack, and in a loose rush M. Taniwha secured and scored a good try. Ohangai 3, Fraser Road 3. Both teams then strove hard to score, but defence was sound. Ohangai took play to Road quarters and the latter had to force. Again Ohangai attacked, but Notman marked well and saved the situation. Just afterwards “no side’' was called, leaving the scores — Ohangai 3 Fraser Road 3 Mr A. Spratt was referee.

Wairarapa and Rush, at Napier. September 24.—North Auckland and Auckland v. Thames Valley, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and King Country, at Auckland. September 17.—Nelson, Marlborough and Golden Ray v. Riiller and We.st Coast, at Westport. September 24.—Canterbury, South Canterbury and Ashburton v. Otago, North Otago, North Otago and Southland, at Dunedin. October 1. —North Island v.
