AN UNUSUAL CASE.

CLAIM AGAINST BARONET

LLOYD GEORGE’S FUND

MENTIONED

BY CABLE -PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRiGHI

LONDON, May 9. A reference to the alleged payment of £35,000 to Mr Lloyd George’s fund was made at Leeds when Robert James Watkin sued Sir Henry §amman for £1350 for services rendered. Watkin gave evidence that he was Samman’s office boy in 1896 and partner in 1917. He admitted receiving a gift of £IOOO for managing Samman’s affairs while the latter was on a world trip, also other emoluments, and admitted writing saying that he had no legal claim to £1350, but hoped Samman would recognise the claim for certain reasons, meaning the transfer of the funds for the benefit of a i woman who bore Samman a- child. Counsel asked whether he included a reference to a youthful affair preceding marriage, hoping that Samman would buy his silence. Watkin: Certainly not. Watkin denied inserting in the letter of claim a reference to the payment of £35,000 to Mr Lloyd George’s fund, in consideration of a baronetcy conferred on Samman, thinking that Samman was willing to pay instead of having the case ventilated in a court of law.

Sir H. Samman, giving evidence in the case in which Robert James Watkin is suing him for £1350 for services rendered, denied that he asked Watkin to arrange with the hank for the transfer of £35,000 in connection with his baronetcy. .4 verdict was returned for Samman with costs.
