SOUTHERN TRIAL MATCH.

A trial match between “White® ’ and ‘‘Stripeß”- was played at King fidward Park to-day, -the latter winning by one goal after a : good exhibition.

The teams were : _ Whites. —Barker (Hawera), McOa-t----thv (Auroa), Coffee (Auroa), Dancer (Hawera); Gilbert- (Hawera), Humphries, Ramsay, Fortway, McKenzie, H Jackson (.Auroa), Pollard (M'anaia). Stripes.—Plant, Bear© (Hawera), C. Bettridge (Munaia)., Stewart (Stratford), Freakley, Thorpe, Lull glands, Roberts, Hartley, Rye (Auroa), Muggeridge (Manaiaj. Stripes won the toss, and McKenzie started the ball for Whites, who attacked through Ramsay and Fort way; but were sent back by Beare. for a while Pollard 'looked dangerous, but was uicelv .stopped by Thorpe. Stripes got going, and after a series ot .attacks, Muggeridge centred for Rye to score their first goal. Stripes -still kept up the pressure, and Freakley put in a great shot, which Ranker just tipped over the bar from the 'flag kick. Gilbert .secured, and set his forwards o-oing, but Bettridge cleared in! good stvle from Fortway. McKenzie, by clever footwork, beat several opponent® only to shobt pa-st the post. At the other end'Roberts made a great attempt to score. Barker saving in great style. The White® were having more of' the -game at this stage, -and: -continually pressed the Stripes’ defence. A good run down ' by Ramsay -and Fortwav saw McKenzie -score from the fatter’s pais. The game was very, even, both side® attacking in turn, but no further score came before half-time, when the board read: I—l. • The -second spell -saw the vv antes- attacking strongly. Plant saved from Pollard and again from Gilbert. Stripes got going through Freakley, Laiiglands and Roberts. Barker .-saved from Hartley and Gilbert sent -his forwards away, but Jackson’s shot hit the crossbar, and McKenzie headed just over. Freakley tried a -long ishot, and .from a mix-up in front of tlio goal Hartley (Stripes) beat Barker with/ a low shot. 2—l , c ,. . Atfer a spell of midfield play, Stripes scored again through Rye. Whites attacked for some time, and Ramsay forced corner off Betteridge. Fartway placed the'flag kick in front of the o-oa-l for McKenzie 1 to equalise. . ■ Shortly afterwards Stripes again took the lead. Rye securing with a shot Which, gave Barker no chance. There was no further score, and a good interesting game- ended with the score one point in favour of the Stripes. Mr Leo -Mitchell refereed.

NORTHERN TRIAL GAME

NEW PLYMOUTH, May 7. The Association trial match. Whites v. Blues, played on the racecourse, was of rather a tame nature, although at times some brilliant pieces of work were seen The players on the held were E. Spedding, Davis, and Brown, while Rovsten played a safe game in “°Winning the toss, Blues decided to nlav with a slight cross wind iri their favour. From the kick-off Whites pressed and looked very dangerous, but Royston saved. Play returned to midfield. From a free kick Brown was placed in a scoring position. Hie Whites managed to -scramble away his shot for a fruitless corner Play fluctuated for' some time-, the ball beiiio- continually in touch owing to the wind'. Hill made a splendid long run and centred: across to Gardner, who found no trouble in netting the ball. Later Ibbotson grazed the upright with a low swift shot, and from the goal kick plav returned to midfield. Play o-raduallv neared the opposite goal and a hard 'shot by Henderson was saved bv Shepherd. ' The Whites received three goal kick® in quick succession. The position was relieved -by a long run by Ibbotson, who carried play into the opposing quarters. Rae, securing the leather, rushed doirii upon an open goal to net the ball with ah easy kick Some time later a forward rush placed the Whites in a- scoring position and F,. Spedding netted the leather with a low fast shot. F-or the remainder of the game Whites kept the Blues bottled up in their territory.
