FRENCH CANAL SCHEME

COMPLETED SINCE 1012

LONDON, May 3. The Paris correspondent of “The Times” states that the President, M. Doumerguo, opened the Rove Tunnel, the last link connecting the port of Marseilles with the River Rhine by canal.

The scheme, which will enable the carrying? out of barge traffic, is a century old. The canaL.h'as been completed since 1912. It is five miles long, 70 feet wide and two fathoms deep. This will enable 1500-ton barges to pass one another at any point. The rock extracted was twice the amount excavated from the famous Simplon tunnel through the Alps. The scheme will also permit of the extension of the Marseilles Docks.
