The death of Mr. John Clulow, aged 73, the owner of the Rangedale estate at Pori, a well-known pioneer settler, is reported in a Press Association telegram from Pahiatua. Mr. G. E. Godber has resigned the Grancl Secretaryship of the Manchester Unity of Oddiellows, and will be succeeded by Mr. A. G. of Nelson, who will he stationed at Wellington.

Mr. Morgan Carkeek, who was one of the engineers engaged in prospecting for a western rout© for the North Island Main Trunk Railway many years ago, died at Otaki on Wednesday, at'the age of 93 years.

A New York cable message announces the death of Hudson Maxim, the American inventor. He made a study of chemistry, and in 1888 applied his energies to- explosives and ordnance, and was one of the first to make smokeless powder. He later invented the explosive Maximite. A compliment was paid to Mr W. Rowe —an old and) valued member since 1889, and possibly before that year—at the ordinary meeting of the Egmont A. and) P. Association on Saturday. On- the chairman’s .motion Mr Rowe, who had decided to resign, was made an honorary life member. Mr. John Roberts, an old and respected citizen of New Plymouth, passed away at his residence on Saturday, after an. illness lasting ten days, at the age of 60 years. The deceased gentleman was -born in, New Plymouth, and with the exception of five years spent at Auckland, resided there all his life. Throughout hi® lifetime, he was keenly interested in five-brigade work and was £h© possessor of the gold star for twenty-five years’ service. He was also a keen bowler. In addition to- the widow, there are three sons and four daughter® left to mourn their loss.
