EGG MARKET
PRICES HARDENING,
The price of eggs has for some time been very high and shows no signs of easing at present. The secretary of the Egg Circle is notified from Wellington' that 3/6 to 3/8 is being cleared wholesale in that centre. Growers report that pullets were somewhat late in starting to lay. Then, after beginning well, -went off as the result of the first cold snap some weeks since and began to moult.
Preserved eggs are bringing as much as 2s 7d, whereas at this time of the year usually the price runs about Is 9d to 2s. Last year this was about the average, though a small lot reached 2s 6d. The large users of eggs rvho did not stock up early are having to pay dearly for their supplies. One case is reported where a local man, after turning down a supply offered at Is 6d, had to buy later at Is lOd. The position docs not look too good for the next three or four months, and no doubt many householders will have to cut out eggs from the menu.
