BAPTIST CHURCH.

PROGRESS IN HAWERA

CAMPAIGN FOR CHURCH BUILDING.

Some interesting details have been given b" Mr F. W. Horner, lion, secretary-, concerning the growth of the Baptist Church in. Hawera. He says cn.c work was started four years ago under the pastorate of the Rev. E. N. Goring. The services and SundaySchool were at first held in the Foresters’ Hall, but subsequently moved to die Oddfellows’ Hall, in High Street, which was found to be more convenient for the purpose. Two veans later the •Oddfellows’ trustees decided to lease che hall, and the church had again to move, to the Scout Hall, in Albion Street, where the services and Sundayschool are now carried on. As the work grew, the inconvenience of having only a rented hall for Sundays and one week night was greatly felt, and the members decided to secure a church site. A suitable section on the corner of Surrey and Argyle streets was purchased, and towards the cost of this the members subscribed or raised the sum of £3OO.

In September last a campaign for a church building was inaugurated. It was desired to erect a. building that would be moderate in cost, but in keeping with the progress of the town, and £ISOO was set aside as the objetive of the campaign. So far the members have raised towards this figure the sum of approximately £950, and this amount has been raised almost by the members themselves and from Baptist friends throughout the Dominion. The fair now being organised in the Foresters’ Hall is largely- an effort within the town, and in this the members invito the support of their fellow townspeople, to enable the f.rectiou of the church building! to be proceeded with towards the end of the year.
