ZULU CHIEF’S CLAIM.
BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. CAPETOWN, May 5. Solomon Dinizulu, chief of the Zulus, is suing the “Natal Mercury” for £SOOO damages for alleged defamation.
The paper alleged that Dinizulu insulted the Prince of Wales on the 'occasion of his visit to Eshhowe, when 6000 Zulus assembled to dance in honour of the Prince, by parading outside the perimeter of the gathering and receiving the Eoyal Salute of Bayete, the roar of the salute distracting the dancers and withdrawing attention from the Prince. The paper also ■ alleged that the whale affair was premeditated to flout the Prince.
The “Mercury” pleads that the article was true in substance; in fact, that it was fair comment and was without maliee.
The first witness, the Chief Commis sioner of Natives, stated that Dinizulu’s conduct was exemplary and there was not a suggestion of an insult. Spontaneous outbursts in favour of Solomon must be expected. It is expected that the case will last for a week.
