SPORTS AT KAPONGA.
SPIRITED COMPETITION. EXCITING FINISHES. If weather conditions had been ordered, they cou-.d not possibly have hen hotter tLa'n the prevailing conditions for the ivaponga hports Club’s -seventh annual gathering, held on Victoria Park yesterday. Enticed by the favourable weather and the prospect of witnessing first-class- performances, there was an u trend ante of about 1100 spectators', and it is safe to assert that not many were disappointed, ’lhe most notable features of the gathering wttme the excellent management throughout the day by the responsible officials, the great aggregation of top-notch competitors iib the running arid held events, and C. ParJkeur, the sprint cyclist. The la-tte-r is a finished rider, and withal a beautifully mode 1 led athlete, but the handicapper asked too much of him, evidently forgetting the long months of training, per medium of load racing, that .lies behind the majority of Taranaki wheelmen Johnson, Stocianan, Yardley and Gargan, with, their handicaps, were hard nuts for Parker to crack, but lie showed his mettle in every engagement excepting the two mile' race, when he_ caved in on the last lap. McCann. New Plymouth., also rode well, but, like Parker, found his impositions too heavy. On 1 account of the large fie'ds engaged, and the evenness of the competitors’ powers, the open, foot races provided much excitement, and some very dose finishes, were witnessed. Much credit is due tfe the following club officials for. the expeditions and smooth conduct of the meeting. A very pleasing feature of the gathering was the lengthy programme of good music supplied by the Manaia Munioioal Band, which mustered 28 strong under Bandmaster J. A. G. Cosgrove. A luncheon and afternoon tea booth, conducted b.v the Methodist Cadies’ Guild, prodded for the wants of all ; while hoon-la tables, controlled by the Plunkct Society, filled the requirements of young and old in the amusement line. The running and cycling track were in an excellent state,, the forethought shown towards competitors by the provision of a spacious marquee as a dressing roont was much appreciated. , The gate takings were satisfactory, and compared favourably with the receipts of previous years.
