YALEDICTORY GATHERING

POPULAR RESIDENT HONOURED

A large gathering of town, and district residents assembled at the Mauaiia town Hall on AVednesclay ev.einmg on rile occasion of the farewell social tendered to Mr S. H. Greaves who, after a residence of five years in the town, s leaving in the neaa- future. The gathering assembled at artistically decorated tables, upon which a. supper vefitting"the occasion was served.' * Air J. E. Ward piesided, and opened the proceedings with the loyal toast. 1 n proposing the toast “Our Guest,” he chairman expressed the regret felt >y the many friends of Mr Greaves .oiieeruiiig his projected departure from Hie town, in which, during his five -ears of residence, he had earned the ‘.“isteein of a wide circle of acquainti.nces. Air ' Greaves had ifriveh willing ;erviee ini'- all movements affecting the welfare of the district. He had been a member of the Town Board, had been actively associated' with football, nockey, cricket and bo was. He had also been noted for his work in connection with the Returned Soldiers’, Association, as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and was known" for bis fine character in business circles, while in other spheres Airs Gireaves had been equally popular. On behalf of the gathering, the chairman extended sincere wishes far the future happiness of Air and Airs Greaves , and family, and as a token of goodwill he presented Air Greaves with a travelling rug. Tribute to the work carried opt by Mr Greaves iri connection with the' R.S.A. was paid bv the president, Mr •Tames Anderson. “Your many soldier oa’s are indeed sorry to lose you,” said Mr Anderson, in handling Air Greaves a frii.it salad stand handsomely wrought in silver, as a presentation to Mr and Mrs Greaves from the R.S.A. ■ Others who spoke to the. toast were Dr. C. R. Davies (on behalf of the medical profession), Mr J. Hickey (Alans ia Town Board), Air E. Burke (County district), and Air G. AVa-tts (business people), all of whom endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers, and gave further tribute to the. guest of the evening, and to Airs Greaves. The response of Air Greaves was received with a burst- of applause. Air Greaves recalled various incidents ire•ating to his five years in Manaia, which were among the happiest of his life. He thanked the .speakers _ for their courteous remarks and gifts, which would he treasured by Airs G reaves and liim-self as reminders, of their manv friends in Alahaia. The presentation, ceremony concluded with an enthusiastic interpretation! of “For he’s a Jollv Good Fellow.” Other toasts of the evening were: ‘ 'Returned Soldiers” (Air J. E. Ward —Mr J. AfcOartv iumr.); “Medical Profession (Air A. Hama —Dr. C. R. Davies) ; “Dairy Industry” (Mr Smith —Air E. Burke 1 • “Successor” (Air Oxley—Mr Winter): “The Ladies” (Mr Barnes — Afessrs K. Murrav and E. Long hi nr.): “Entertainers” (Air J. Hickey—Messrs.. T. Coleman. J. Forrester, J. Husband and B. Badland): “The Chairman.” proposed by Air AY. J. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Alan aid? Lodge on Tuesday evening it was decided to arrange a social evening to entertain visitors from the. Kaponga aud Eltham lodges.

The guessing competition: name of flower in connection with the Manaia blanket Society shop day on Tuesday was won by Mrs J. Meuli and Colonel Sutherland, the name being rosemary. The Manaia Municipal Brass Band will give a programme in the lotujnda to-morroAV (Saturday) night at 7130 o’clock. A full muster is requested."
