The Manawatu Racing Club meeting wos commenced to-day in fine and bright weather, before a fair attendance. The track was on the dead side. Town Bird, Waicullus, and Orazone carried nearly all the money in the Woodhey Handicap. Vast Acre, Waicullus, Rerinthia., Thomond, and Town Bird were bunched: to the turn, with Orazone last. Town Bird, easily ridden, beat Waicullus by a bare head, but the winner. could have scored comfortably if ridden out. Manly was two lengths away third, and then came Orazone, Vast Acre, Mon Mint, and Royal Flight At ap inquiry later for inter-
ference just on the post, the julge’s placing® were altered to Waicullus first land Town Bird second. The Karere Hurdles saw the Brigadier Bill—Omahu bracket land Vexatious carrying nearly half the total investments. Kalakaua, Hallowmom, Brigadier Bill, and Santonio led to the first fence, and, once over, Hiallowmorn led Brigadier Bill, Kalakaua, Bonny Rill, Santonio, and Eonmark, with Sottano tailed off last. Passing the stands Bonny Rill and Rangi Sarto just led Brigadier Bill and Santonio, with Hiallowmorn, Ardatli, and Vexatious next. Brigadier Bill and Santonio led two fences from (home; next came Pedro, Ardath, Hallowmorn, and Rangi Sarto. San Pedro and Brigadier Bill were on terms at the last fence, with Ardiatli and Hallowmom handy. In the last bit San Pedro dtew out, and beat Brigadier Bill by 'a length and a half, with Ardath .a similar distance away third, a head in front of Hallowmorn. Then at intervals oame Kalakaua, Vexatious, and Sottano. San Pedro won well and is a promising sort. In the Prince of Wales Handicap, Mandane (£4SS) and True Blood (304) were the favourites. A bad start saw Star Area lead out from First Acre and Rouex, with Royal Diadem and Scotch Mixture last of a straggling field. Ti-ue Blood was gent up to the leaders, and with half a mile to go' he was out with Peneus and Rouex, with First Acre, Vertigern, Captain Gazeley, and Civility next, and Mandane last. Civility kept up her effort round the turn, and took the lead a furlong from home, but succumbed to the fast-finishing Black Mint by a head. Yoma, unlucky, was two lengths away third, and then, in a heap came Vertigern, True Blood, Kilceit, Rouex, Novar, Vivo, and Buoyant.
Cohesion and Catcall were the prime picks in the Te Matai Handicap. Cohesion ran up second to Addlepate and Gordon Swift with three furlongs to go, with Mandarine, Koauau, land Gardant handy. Cohesion led into the straight, and won easily by a length and a half from Koauau, with Capitulation half a length laway third. Catcall was fourth, and Inoe, Gardant-. Lin Arlington next. The winner scored comfortably, but Capitulation was very unlucky. In the Sires’ Produce Stakes the Gasoony—Great Charter bracket was better backed than the Thaw—Damaris bracket. After Gascony had led Great Charter and Damaris to the turn, with Thaw last, Thaw put in an effort and worried Gascony out of it in the last fifty yards, beating him by a head. Damaris was two lengths iaway third, and Great Charter in line with her. In the Awapuni Geld Cup, Commendation headed the pacemaker, Royal Divorce, with three furlongs to go, where Rapine came up inside of Piuthair. Piuthair hung in on Itapine all the way down the straight, and in a great battle Commendation, ridden right out with whip and spur, beat Rapine by three-quarters of a length. Piuthair was a head away third, and Royal Divorce six lengths away. Lady Cavendish was a decided favourite for the Telegraph Handicap with anything else at a good price. Lacinius, Lady Cavendish, and Tukia began best, and they were followed down the back by Benzora, G ail lard, Mireusonta, and Royal Damon. Benzora and Lady Cavendish just led Licinius land Royal Damon as they raced for the turn, with, Tukia and Mireusonta handy. Licinius took charge as they straightened up for home, and looked a winner, but Crown Area came fast, and beat Licinius by a neck, with Benzora a head away. Then came Gaillard and Tukia heads away, and Mireusonta and Mis® Hupan next. The winner put up a great performance after beginning slowly. Hathor was a good priced favourite for the concluding event. She began well, with Kalos, Partaga, and Henna. Hathor led down the back from Kalos, Partaga, Henna, Superb King, and Break o’ Day. Hathor was not troubled to' win by a length from Partaga, who beat Pop Off by a similar distance. Then came Kalos" Merle, Break o’ Day, and Oolorina. Nominations for all events for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting, to be held on 19th and 21st May, close on Monday next, May 2.
