The feat of taking a bicycle right round the Coromandel Peninsula (has been accomplished by Mr C. Barwell, of Mount Wellington (says the “New Zealand Herald”). As the result of much thought, Mr Barwell recently succeeded in combining the humble push bicycle with a canvas boat, and rivers and harbours no longer impede him. This boat, which is collapsible, does not weigh more than 351 b., and has the virtue of being convertible into a snug tent. Mr Barwell proceeded via Thames, and in the last stages of his journey rowed down the Waikato river. He had a dangerous experience when crossing the Manukau Heads from the mouth of the Waiuku river. The sea was calm when he set out, but a breeze suddenly sprang up when he was half-way across. However, after many anxious moments, the crossing was completed in safety. Apart from this, Mr Barwell had a more or less uneventful trip. (By special arrangement.
