ALLEGED LIBEL.
ACTION AGAINST “CHRISTCHURCH PRESS.” (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 27. The hearing of a claim for £IOOO for alleged libel by Cyrus J. R. Williams, engineer for the Lyttelton Harbour Board against the Christchurch Press Company was continued to-day before Mr Justice Adams and- a special jury. The day was occupied in hearing the evidence of engineers from different parts of the Dominion, including Mr. F. W. Furkett, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, regarding the work carried out at Lyttelton under Mr Williams’ direction and advice.
At the conclusion of plaintiff’s case counsel for the defence was given leave to move later for a non-suit. In opening for the defence counsel said that public men were liable to be subjected to comment by newspapers. The administration of local affairs by local bodies was one of the subjects on which the law allowed comments, as being of public interest, and the board’s administration was a matter of public interest. The statements did not exceed the bounds of fair criticism. The evidence was concluded and counsel’s addresses will be heard to-morrow.
