♦ OBSERVANCES IN LONDON WREATHS AT CENOTAPH. GENERAL BIRDWOOD’S MESSAGE BSf CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 11.40 a.m. to-day. LONDON, April 25. Around 1 the 'base of the cenotaph the mass of Anzac Day wreaths rapidly accumulated. In the morning Sir Joseph Cook officiated on behalf of Australia; and Sir James Parr, in the presence of Viscount Jellicoe, on bebaif of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, whose wildfiower emblem arrived frozen in ice. Sir James Purr also acted on behalf of an Auckland mother. Both ceremonies took place in the presence of a squad of blueacketis from the. cruiser Dunedin, whose captain deposited a wreath. A wreath was also laid on the New Zealanders’ graves at Aidershot.
There was a crowded attendance at St. Clements Dane, including Sir Joseph and Lady Cook, Sir James and Lady Parr, Lord Chelmsford, Sir lan Hamilton, and Viscount Jellicoe. _ A new Anzac hymn, “Father and King Immortal,” written by the St. Clements’ vicar, the Rev. Mr Pennington Bickford, and the words of which were composed by Mrs Pennington Bickford, was a feature of the service. Sir / William Birdwod sent a letter to Sir Joseph Cook, in which this passage occurred: “The memory of the fallen is still green with us, and will always remain so in all Australia.” He also wrote to Sir James Parr, conveying greetings and remembrances to all New Zealand men who fought, on Gallipoli.
IMPRESSIVE SERVICES AT MELBOURNE. BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 11.50 a.m. to-day. MELBOURNE, April 26. Twenty-eight thousand soldiers and sailors of all arms marched through the thronged streets in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of York, the Gov-ernor-General, Lord and Lady Stonehav'en and many other prominent officials, to the exhibition building, where a packed commemoration service Avas held. It was much the largest and most impressive gathering of returned soldiers since the Avar. Those present included a detachment from the Renown. The Duke took the salute at too cenotaph.
SOLEMN OBSERVANCE AT SYDNEY. Received 10.50 a.m. to-day. SYDNEY, April 26. The principal functions in Sydney yesterday Avere the depositing of. wreatlis on soldiers * graves and memorial. and a monster united religions service held at the Domain, rvliich was attended by the State Governor, Sir Dudley and Lady de Chair, the Picmie'r, Mr. J. T. Lang, and many representative men, many thousands of returned soldiers and sailors and others -with Avar services, their relatives and the general public. Subsequently theift Avas a procession of soldiers through the city. The whole service Avas most impressive, and Avas a solemn remembrance of the dead. Similar observations took place in the country centres. LOCAL CHURCH SERVICES. The memory of Anzac AA’as perpetuated at the churches in HaAvera and district on Sunday. At St. Mary s Church the Rev. H. C. Isaacson, vicar 'Of Eltham, Avas the preacher, dealing specially Avith the subject of the sacrifice made by the men in the Avar. At St. John’s Presbyterian Church, the Re\'. R. E. Evans preached on the subject “The Kingdom of the Will.” At, the Methodist Church the subject taken by the Rev. W. J. OxbrOAV was “The Religion of the Threshold.” At the Baptist Church the Be\'. L. C. 11. Barhour preached, his subject being Freedom —What it Cost, and at t c Methodist Church in Kaponga a special memorial service Avas held by Rev. A. Blakemore, to which a special invitation had been given to returned soldiKcrs.
