SURPLUS OF HALF A MILLION.
RESULTS BETTER THAN ANTICI-
PATED,
(BY TELEGRAPH - PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, April 25. The Hon. W. Downia Stewart (Minister of Finance) stated to-day that atthough, under the provisions of the Public Revenues Act, the accounts for the financial 1 year ended on March 31, would not be available for publication until about the middle, of next month, he was, nevertheless, able to announce that i the position in respect to the ordinary revenue account was provisionally as follows: — Revenue for the Year £24,940,000 Expenditure £24,353,000 Surplus £587,000 Of the surplus some £315,000 has been applied to debt reduction, and .the balance carried forward. This amount applied towards debt reduction is, of course, in addition to the statutory provisions of the Public Debt Repayment Act of 1925. “It will be remembered that, in the Budget,” stated Mr Stewart. “I anticipated that- the revenue and expenditure would just about balance, so that it is gratifying that the results should be better than was anticipated. “Having regard to existing economic conditions. I hope to give a review of the financial position at a later date.”
