Mr J. Coulter, Government meat inspector, of Waiters,, is at present in Hawera, and is staying at the Egimont Hotel.
Mr and Mrs F. Smith and) party, of Wellington, were in Hawera yesterday., returning Tram, an' extended! trip to the northern parts of the island.
Recent visitors to the White Hart Hotel included: Messrs Paseoe, Lobb, and Stewart (New Plymouth); Mr H. Robinson (Wanganui); Mr H. D. Smith (Manaia). The death of William diaries Gatenby at New Plymouth last week marked the passing of another of New Zealand’s early 'Settlers. Mr. Gatenby, wiho h|ad passed his 84th birthday, came from Yorkshire', England, in’the sailing ship .“Maraval,” arriving at Auckland in 1879, after a voyage of 100 days. He was accompanied by bis wife and five sons and an adopted dlaugjhfer. He settled in Auckland and went into business as a draper at Mount Eden. For a number of years he had lived in retirement at Te Kiri. He is survived by his five sons, 24 grandchildren, and four great-grand-children. His wife predeceased him 22 years ago. Two of his sons, Mr. R. H. Gatenby, of Tataraimaka, and Mr. J. M. Gatenby of Mangatoki, are well known in Taranaki.
A pioneer settler who came to the Dominion) way, back in 1841, Mr Isaac Bayly, died in Auckland on Sunday at the age of 88 years. He was one of the very early settlers in Hawera, and for a long period, up till about 20 .years ago, lived on the South road in the house now held by Mr Lovell. He was well known and greatly respected by the people of the town during bis residence here. Born in Devon, be ,-ame out with his parents, Mr and Mrs Thomas Bavly, being one of the passengers of the Amelia Thompson, which reached New Plymouth in September, 1841. Mr Bayly took a full share in the public life of the early settlement, and was a member of the Provinoia’l Council. He also took part in the Maori War, and was one of the volunteer force at Waireka. He is survived' by his widow, a sister of the late Mr W. Dingle. Mrs J. L. Perry (New Plymouth) is a. sister, and: Mr Humphrey Bayly (Gisborne) a brother. His death will be learnt with re>gret by large numbers of friends in Taranaki.
