BIG ROBBERY.

JEWELS WORTH £750. SYDNEY, April 8. A big haul of jewellery was made by thieves at the shop of Arthur Wigney, Sydney Road, Manly, between 6 and .10 last night. The loss is estimated at £750. The articles stolen consisted of 18 diamond rings, 63 gold watches, 32 gold bangles, 15 gold sleeve-links, several cigarette cases, 20 pencils, pipes, and other goods.

The robbery was discovered at .10 by Mr Wigney > who went to put out lights in the shop. There is hardly any doubt that the robbery' had been well planned. The police believe that the thief commenced operations, but failed when the shop was closed, on the day of the Duke of York’s arrival. The burglar alarm from the shop to the Manly police station rang that morning, but when the police arrived the thief had disappeared. It is thought the thief was in the shop for some time. His efforts to break his way into the place must have taken about an hour, and the gathering of the loot another hour. Ho was seen inside near the front window by one of Mr Wigney’s sons, who passed the shop at eight o’clock, but was taken for an other son. The police, found to-day that a panel had been cut out of the back door and a hole sawn through a sheet of on the inside of the door. The wires of the electric light and the burglar alarm had. been cut. .The thief left behind a jiair of red .rubber gloves.
