WAR ON DISEASE
DEFEAT OF TUBERCULOSIS. VICTORY SEEMS CERTAIN. APPEAL FOR RENEWED' EFFORT. (BY TELEGRAPH - PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTOHURGH, April 20. “The ultimate defeat, of tuberculosis seems so certain that it appears to be worth while making a determined and united effort in New Zealand at the earliest possible moment/’ states the medical director of tuberculosis institutions in bis annual report to the North Canterbury Hospital Board. “In 1902 about one death in 10 was due to tuberculosis, but in 1926 it- was only about one in sixteen. In every part of the world, where active measures are being taken against tuberculosis similar results are being recorded. It may be assumed that the present time there are about 7COO recognisable cases of tuberculosis in New Zealandi and it is obvious that the sanatoria are treating only a small proportion of these cases. Even in Christchurch, where we are treating more of our consumptives than any of the other district are doing, we are certainly not dealing with more than half of those who are actually suffering from, the disease.”
