WELLINGTON, April 20

Desmond Scanlon, the champion runner of St. Patrick’s ColLge, a son of Mr J. C. Scanlon, ex-chief gaoler, and Roy Diedrieh, the ’Varsity wing-for-ward, and a it-phew of Mr Scanlon, senior, have nor yet returned from their attempt to moss the Tararua Ranges on Thursday last. They left L’-vin on Thursday night, hoping to reach Carterton or Masterton on Monday morning and return to Wellington tne same night. Their continued absence is occasioning great anxiety. “The crossing of the track taken by th;_- two takes four days under good conditions, and parties usually equip themse'ves for six days. The distance from Levin to Masterton or Carterton is about 60 miles. The track is over verv difficult country and is not well defined, and the tramptrs might easily wander into one of the numerous bypaths anid become lost. In wet weather it is possible for them to be cut off by flooded rivers. The two took food for four days. Th.Bv carried a compass and an electric torch. Search parties are out. looking for them. MASTERTON, April 20. Parties of experienced bush men and Hampers leave early in the morning to search for Seanon and Diedrieh, who are overdue on a trir> across the rang'-'s from Levin to Mnsberton.
