BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 11.35 a.m. to-day. SHANGHAI, April 13. Optimism over the relations between Russia, China and Japan is increasing. Official reports from the Yangtsze, however, indicate increased feeling against Japan. '"■South. Manchurian railway shares, which dropped heavily following Moscow’s ultimatum to Peking, recovered sensationally upon assurances from Moscow to M. Shideharai that Russia does not propose to usei force. The new Soviet ambassadors at Tokio similarly expressed Russian sympathy with China and admiration for Japan.
BRITISH FORCES. SUBSTANTIA L DETACHMENTS. Received 12.55 p.m. to-day. LONDON, April 13. In the House of Commons, Sir Austen Chamberlain told Mr H. Day (Lab.), the member for Southwark, that the British military forces in China at present consisted of 16 infantry battalions, with the necessary auxiliary troops; also 14,000 Navy personnel. Four additional battalions were en route to China.
