The new Government hostel at Waitomo Caves will be 1 ready for next season if the hopes of the contractor (Mr N. Cole) are realised (Wellington “Evening Post”). During the past fortnight, carpenters and labourers have been, busy erecting quarters for the housing of 50 men during the winter months. Given fair weather, it is anticipated that the new accommodation will be ready for occupation by next Christmas. When the building scheme is completed there will not he a. more modern hostelry in the Dominion. Last year there were 10,550 visitors, and traffic has increased this year. At- present the visitor inspects the three caves, and then moves on to make room so that more visitors may be accommodated. Tt is intended, .however. that the future visitor to Waitomo will go through quite a different procedure. The beauties of the district are not in the caves alone, and with the completion of the hostel other attractions will he developed. Historic Kawhia Harbour, the Te Anga natural bridge. Pin Piri Caves, the Marakopa Falls, and the scenic attractions of the A wakino-Mangakokopu-Keritehere-Te Anga route will be developed.. It is also the intention of the l department to lay down howling greens, tennis courts, and a golf course.
