GIBRALTAR TRAGEDY.
INQUEST ON COLONEL. BY CABLB-rRESS ASSOCIATION— COBYRXGH'J GIBRALTAR, April 11. At the inquest on Colonel Fitzgerald a verdict- was returned that Lieutenant Duffield shot Fitzgerald. Further proceedings depend on the Governor.
A previous cable on April 7 stated that. Colonel J. Fitzgerald, officer commanding the second battalion of the First Surreys at Gibraltar, had paid his usual afternoon visit to the orderly room. Duffield said he wished to see him. The adjutant obtained permission and Duffield entered. Presently shots were heard, and the colonel was found shot in the head. He said: “He shot me. Arrest him.” The colonel soon died. Duffield admitted his guilt, was arrested, and placed in the mental ward. It is understood that he was suffering from delusions. Officers say that lie had no feeling towards the. colonel, who recently compitmented Duffield on his good work.
