ELECTRICITY.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I would like to express an opinion on electricity charges—a theme which is of vital interest to practically, every householder in the borough of Hawera. How refreshing it is to see that the Christchurch public are not being overcharged for electric energy. Compare the rates as published in. yesterday’s “Hawera Star”: Heating. Hawera 4d per unit Christchurch Id per unit Cooking. Hawera 2d per unit Christchurch Id per unit Radiators. Hawera 4d per unit Christchurch ljd per unit It is at once apparent that the Havvera County Electric Company’s charges are far too high in comparison, and in fairness to the public who have kept them in business for the past twenty odd years I think it is “up to” the company to permit consumers to enjoy the privilege of using more current at a cheaper rate. Sixteen to twenty per cent, dividend is to be appreciated, but such a good thing as that cannot- last for ever. Numbers of people in Hawera are going to find it a hard winter, and to meet their electric account for 5s (for value not received in many cases) on top of other expenses will not go far towards happiness and prosperity. The prices of everything are on a downward trend, and it would give us all great pleasure if the Electric Company exhibited a public spirit , and reduced their charges for electricity forthwith. Thanking you for your valuable space. I am, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO.
