NOTES AND COAIMENTS. (By “Maecenas.”) Saturday next will see the opening of a busy racing season. In these parts most interest will centre in the Auckland and Feilding meetings. Northerners may favour the chance of Phaola. in the Great Northern Oaks next Saturday, but those who witnessed Lady Desmond's victories in the Nelson and Rangitikei Cups will be surprised should Phaola even make her do her best. Alerrv Damon won so well for trainer 11. Hatch at the Alasterton meeting that from now oil he is sure to be in the boom with bettors

As a two-year-old joy King was classed as very little inferior to Commendation and Lysandcr, and as a matter of fact beat this pair in the rich Royal Stakes at Eller.siie. This season iie has already shown a return to his true form by winning at the Napier Park meeting and finishing a good second to Reremoana in the Thompson Handicap.

Whenuanui appears as an acceptor for the Auckland Easter Handicap, hut lie is reported as an unlikely starter in the event.

Fred Davis has Auratum looking well at Trentham, and to run third in the Pacific Handicap she finished better than any of her opponents. Auratum is engaged at Ellerslie next Saturday, where Desert Gold’s relative may uphold her high-class breeding.

Glenross ran an excellent race on the first day of the .late Wanganui meeting, ami if he has gone on the right way since, should make things interesting in the chief handicap at Feilding next Saturday. Mireusonta was raced each day of the recent Rangitikei meeting, and also competed at the Alasterton meeting last Thursday, but in none of the races did he display any of his former brilliancy. Possibly Absurd’s son is getting too old to win races, a striking feature about the breed.

Ruakura will be improved considerably by her race at the Masterton meeting, and even with the extra penalty incurred, is certain to again run weil at the Wairarapa meeting next Saturday. The acceptance for the Easter Handicap, to be decided at Ellers! ie next Saturday, reveals the presence of all those horses generally looked on as favourably handicapped. These include Eeremoana, Jov King, Day Guard, High Pitch, Oreum, and Le Choucas. Even this lot will produce a good scramble for the big prize. Paleta cost Mew Zealanders a small fortune when defeated in Australia last Saturday. Despite the fact that he was heavily supported, it may be found that the form was not correct. Paleta may not be equal to beating the Australian crack two-year-old Royal Feast, but it will surprise the writer should the New Zealander not he equal to making an interesting contest even with that good youngster. Royal Divorce showed such a brilliant turn of speed at Opaki last Thursday that many good give him an excellent chance in the Foster Handicap to be decided at Kllerslie on Saturday. 'lf one could rely on the English-bred horse doing Iris best, l,ie certainly would have a. good chance, but many are inclined to think that Royal Divorce is unreliable. The class engaged at Riccarton at Easter cannot lie called high-caass, and certainly not up to the standard one would expect, considering the good prize-money offering. With those facts in one’s mind, it is surprising to find that Hvnanna has been allowed to forfeit his southern engagements for the more difficult races to be decided at Kllerslie. Hynanna’s chief mission to the Auckland meeting will be in quest of the St. Leger, but Coin - mendation looks likely to boat him again. An incident possibly unparalleled in the history of racing or trotting in New Zealand took place at the Wanganui Trotting Club’s meeting last Saturday Just prior to the horses leaving the birdcage to compete ill the Foster Handicap, heavy rain set in, and (be drivers donned their oilskin (■•oats over iheir colours. The rain continued right iqi to the* start illg t ime, and the starter foolishly allowed the drivers to hoop their ovorooats oil, and despatched the Held under this novel condition. Fortunately, Explosion won verv easily from Nellie Parson, with Gaza, ami Bell Dial following at intervals. and not mnoli ditticulty was experienced, in picking out Ilie “placed’ competitors. .Just what would have happened ltad the race been as close as the following one (when the first four were divided by. half heads) is hard to foretell, as no judge could have had a possible chance of sorting out the various drivers all wearing oilskin coats.

Allan McDonald, one of whose knee caps was broken when Dene us made the mistake with him at Napier Park, has had the various pieces wired together. The doctor expects that McDonald will ultimately have the full uso of the knee again. It is satisfactory to know that he is doing as well as can be expected. The Thorn, Damaris, Thaw, and Covent Garden will be Mr. G. M. Currie’s representatives at the Auckland meeting this month A four-year-old brother to Magna Charta, in work at Waipukurau, is the property of Mr. W. Henderson, who has been associated with the sport as the owner of Bliss, Allmarimba and others.

The Absurd gelding Deluge, who lias proved an absolute' disappointment since he unexpectedly defeated his stable mate Motley in the Manawatu Stakes of 3925, has been sold by Mr. G. M. Currie, and the chestnut now forms one of H. Lorigan’s team at Trentharn. In the 11 races Deluge contested during last season he only succeeded in gaining a situation on one occasion, and this term nine complete defeats are registered against his name. It will 'be interesting to note if a change of quarters will bring an alteration in Deluge’s racing form. The New Zealand gelding Reonui has yet to win what would be termed a good race stake for his Sydney owner, but, if there is truth in the old saying that “little fish are sweet,” well, then, the owner of Reonui should be quite a happy man, for he has seen his colours carried home in the van on several occasions. Though Reonui was not probably opposed by any noteworthy performers when he won his race at Menaugle Park (N.S.W.), he had to battle against a field of 16, and, as he carried 8.13 and was timed to run the nine furlongs in 1.54, the performance could be voted meritorious. The imported horse Pantheon cost 2400 guineas in England, and since his arrival in Australia he lias won over £IO,OOO in stakes.
