PERSONAL ITEMS.
The resignation of Dr. J. L. Frazer, medical superintendant at the Hawera Hospital, has been received by the board. Dr. Frazer left last evening cn a visit to Auckland. Mr. J. Feaver, senr., of Opunake, accompanied by his daughter, Miss Feaver, will leave on a visit to England next week. He anticipates being away from New Zealand for over a year.
Vice-Admiral Sir Mitchell Hodges has been appointed Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty, and Chief of Naval Personnel, in succession to Vice-Ad-miral Sir Hubert Brand, the appointment to date from August 15 next, says a London Press Association message.
Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P., Mayor of Dunedin, will not be a candidate for the Mayoralty at the forthcoming municipal elections. He intends to devote his time, in the future, to his Parliamentary duties (states a Press Association message). Mr. C. H. Harrison, of Ngaere, recently proceeded to Dunedin (hr the purpose of undergoing a serious operation. His friends will be pleased to hear that this was quite successful, and that he is making a good recovery. At the monthly meeting of the Hawera Municipal Band , ! ,ast night advice was received from Mrs McLean, of Somerset House, that .she would be pleased to make a donation of the boarding expenses of Mr Hay-es, to help thr? hand. He was the solo cornet player who took the engagement for the" contests Mr.s McLean’s generosity was much appreciated.
Writing to the secretary of the Municipal Band Mr Hayes, who took the solo cornet part for the band when it went to the* recent New Ze.aland contest, said he considered the band did very wet l ., considering the keen competition thov had to meet, and the the fact that it was a young combination. He considered that if the members stuck together for -a while under Mr Fox’s care they would eventually attain notable success. It would require hard work to win the contest, but the effort would be good for them. He sent his kindest regards to the members.
The death of Lord Damley was announced by cable yesterday. Tne deceased, Ivo Francis Walter Pligb. was the eighth Earl, the title having been created in 1725. He was born in .1859, and received his education, at Eton and Trinity' College, Cambridge. He was in the Eton eleven in 1876-77. in the Cambridge eleven from 1578 till 188 L, in which year he captained the side. Lord Darnley was captain of the F neb si i eleven which visited Ausf.a.ua in 18'2-83. In the following year the Earl was married to Florence' Rose, the daughter of the late John Stephen Morphy, of Beechwood, \ictoria. Lord Darnley also played tennis and racquets, "and represented Cambridge at these sports.
In the death of Mr William Walsh, farmer, of Finnerty Road, Ngaere, at his 'residence on Thursday, the district loses one of its earliest pioneers, and general regret will be felt by the many friends of the family (says the Eltham “Argus”). Mr Walsh was born in Madras, India his father being a British soldier. He came out to Taranaki with his parents 65 years ago. Mr. Wialsh for many years worked on the railways in Taranaki on the maintenance staff. About thirty years ago he took up land in the Ngaere district, owning farms on the Cllieal, Cornwall, and Finnerty roads. He had been in failing health of late, and his passing was not unexpected. He is survived by his widow and grown-up family.
The death of Mr. Edward Withy, at one time member for Newton, is announced in a private cablegram from England. Early in life the late gentleman entered the iron industry, in which he was very successful. He was able to retire while still in his prime. Mr. Withy left England and came to New Zealand, taking up residence in Auckland. He contested the Newton East seat against the Hon. J. A. Tole, who at that time was Minister of Justice, and he won the seat. He had previously been a member of the British House of Commons, and Ills' long association with politics stood him in good stead. He was a strong advocate of single tax. However, he quickly tired of The Parliamentary life, as he retained his seat for only three years, between 1887 and 1890. He then went to live in the Taranaki district. Many years lago lie returned to' the Old Land, and went to live in Jersey, where Mrs Withv died about a year ago. Mr. Edward Withy, at one time Parliamentary reporter for the “New Zealand Times,’*’ and now a member of the Hansard istaff, is the eldest son of deceased.
