RESPECT FOR ENGLAND.

BECAUSE SHE HAD* SHAKESPEARE.

CHINESE' STUDENT ON THE SITUATION. SPECIAL TO THE STAR. WELLINGTON, April 11. ,The exchange of views between the university students of the world, under the auspices of the Christian students movement, has led to the receipt by a Victoria University College student of a . letter from a follow (Student of tlio Union Theological College, Canton, throwing a vivid light on the views held by that class of Chinese in regard to China’s international relations. Writing in English, the Chinese student says he particularly would like to correspond with the New Zealander on international, affairs, but lie finds it hard to express himself in English. However, he proceeds to do so effectively, as the following quotations show:

“I always think why there is so much trouble between nations is owing to that there are very few opportunities for the people of every country to touch each other heartily. The diplomatic officers, in order to maintain their positions make a dark curtain between the nations and let us cannot see clearly. Formerly all our national affairs were solved by the Government, but now is a new age, that they must be solved by the people themselves.

“I iam very much surprised that you don’t know why China cannot simply charge, what she thinks fit .in the .Customs. How can she charge any more, as it is limited by the unequal treaties:-' The unequal treaties are bounding China and she cannot progress iu any direction—directly in political and economical, land indirectly in every way. The limitation of the protective tariff is only one thing of the unequal treaties. We are against all of them, because they are not built up on the foundations of justice. We want to clear it out first, and make other treaties which will be based on the principle of equality and liberty. They ought to clean them up lor tiie good of China, and also for the good of all the world, because after the great war, the eyes of the world turned to the Ernst. If China cannot stand linn, it is very easy for her to be the conductor of the second great war, as there are many countries want to get lier for settlement or market place. If the great war rise again, the civilisation of our generation will lie at an end. . . .

China i$ a great and old nation, lias more than 3,000 years history, and thick back-ground of civilisation. If we give enough opportunity for h§r L am .sure that she can offer some valuable things to build the better civilisation of the new world.

“Now there is a strong emotion over China, but it is not an emotion against the white, but against the unequal treaties only. De Sun said to us when lie dies: ‘We ought to 00-operate with the peoples Avho treat us equally, to be against the Imperialism,' We are not against the people, but are against the bad policies ancl their systems only. ... Now this emotion, flowing out like a great stream from the wakened soul of China-, and England stands before ft. lam very sorry for your country. “I love England. I respect England, not because she is so strong and has -so many gunboats—they can only destroy herself—but only (because she had Shake spear, Wesley and Morrison. I am very sorry for England because she has very few real friends in China. Of course she had and still has, many slaves an China. T think England needs more friends who- -really love her and do not use her to get their own benefit. But if England still uses the old policy she can only get more slaves and enemies in China. I think the whole trouble between England and China, is only because China has wakened and England treats her in the old way. Do you think .so? Let ns do our duty to .solve the problem by clean out the fogs between each other.’’
