CHAMPION CADETS.

TAR AN AKI’S PREMIERS

C COMPANY, HAWERA

Excellent results have been realised through the week’s course of training ,jV C Company (Hawera) Second Cadet Battalion." Taranaki Regiment, which concluded last- evening. Commencing jiii Monday, parades of two and a half nouns have been held each evening, under the direction of Captain G. H. iYeir, assisted by the platoon commanders. Lieutenants It. It. Hender-] .son, J. W. Bolton and Sergeant V. Sprang, who, in view of the fact that the company was selected iWt evening to represent Taranaki in the Campbell Statuette competition for the Dominion championship, are to he congratulated on the efficiency achieved. The system of consecutive parades, which was adopted o,n' this occasion for the first time, with the company, was intended to complete the training up to the end of the militarv vear, finishing Mav 31, but in order to maintain efficiency for the Dominion competition, further training will be practised this month. At last night’s parade, the fall-m and routine work was carried out before Major D. E. Rremner. M.C., staff office: in charge of the Taranaki district, who also made an inspection, of all ranks, and judged a competition for the best-dressed cadet-. The fall-in was fleeted in a particularly smart manner, and the general turn-out was of an excellent standard. In the individual competition two cadets from each of the three platoons were selected by the respective platoon commanders, the six chosen being: Cadets D. Could, L. W. Wise, D. Barnes. A'. J. .Stratton, 11. Pettit and 11. -J. Mebarrv. After choosing three finalists, the staff officer was presented with a difficult task in giving the award, and had to resort to the finer points, such as the examination of the inside .surfaces of equipment, etc. The award was finally given to Cadet Wise. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. On the conclusion of the parade, the company marched to the Savoy Tea Rooms, where a .social 1 , was held. The out-standm< r feature of the ontertain/nent was the announcement by Major ilremner that, after the evening inspection he had no hesitation, in .selecting the company as, the best town comna'Ti v of cadets in. Taranaki. Accordingly, it would l»e nominated as the representative of the province in the, Campbell Statuette competition. This meant that the company would be in-•-.•r.-ted bv the! examining officers of the Centra 1 Command, and he hoped the cadets would readilv assent to additional training with a view to attaining further honours, if not actually proving the Dominion premiers. He quot'd the remark of a noted general, who had said: “You’ve got- the officers, the N.C.O.’s and the men, and there is no reason why von should not be as good as a company of guards.” Major Rremner presented the, trophies won durinop the, year, and remarked that the company had established a particularly fine record in shooting. The prizewinners’ were as follow: Taranaki Cadet champion shot (Newton King cliallange cup and medal).— Sergeant J. Vinten._ Taranaki champion cadet team (medals).—Sergeants J. Vinten, E. G.

Smith, Corporals W. Carter, F, Quin, and Caedt G. Hamilton. C. Company champion shot- (Lady Godley Challenge Cup).—Lance-Cor-poral *R. K. Barron; runner-up (gold star donated by Lieut. J. W. Bolton), Lance-Corporal A. D. BockeJl. C Company champion, shot, miniature rifle competition (medal donated by Sergeant V. Spragg).—Cadet A. E. Prime. , , , Best dressed cadet (medal donated by company commander). —Cadet L. W. Wise. Items of song and story were rendered bv Lieuts. R. R. Henderson and J W. Bolton. Corporals S. 0. Green and W Carter. Cadets G. McGlasban and L. W. Wise. An instrumental solo was also given by Corporal Carter. and Cadet Wise gave an exhibition of rope spinning. Miss Tapp assisted as pianiste.
