THREE YEAR-DISQUALIFICATION

AUCKLAND. April 8

Toward the end of last year, L. li. Wynyard, who is well-known in racing circles in Auckland, went to Sydney, and it is alleged that during the time he spent in New South Wales, lie went to- the Newcastle races on November 24. lie was ;a disqualified person at the time, having incurred the displeasure, of the racing authorities twice previously. An inquiry was held by the Auckland District Committee of the New Zealand .Racing Conference, and they came to the following decisions: “That the committee are satisfied. on the evidence, that L. H. Wynyard was present at the Newcastle race meeting on November 24, 1926. while a disqualified person, and that he may he, and is. hereby disqualified for a term of six months from March 15, 1927, and fined a sum of 6 sovs. in tennis of Rule 4. part XXXI I of the Rules of Racing.” Tlie second resolution wa.s: “filial L 11. Wynyard is guilty of a corrupt practice under the Rules of Racing within M'o meaning of part XXXTT, Rule 1 n-f). and that he be. and is. hereby i-squplifi-e-'l for a f>erm of tTiro-o years from April 7. 192(1.”

VOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Maecenas.”) The increase of £Bll in the total isator turnover, shown by the Masterion liming Club last Thursday, came as a surprise after so many deficiencies of late. Trosham and Chips (stable mates) each ran well at Opaki last Thursday, and may do even bettor in near future engagemon ts. The imported Piporenzo (Lorenzo —- Piper) was a runner at the Mnstorton meeting last Thursday, and her form was good enough to suggest better •things ere long. When the tapes rose at the start of the chief race at the Masterton meeting last Thursday, Vertigern dived inwards, striking Hynnnna and causing the latter to lose many lengths. Rnval Divorce showed a glimpse of his old-time, brilliancy at Opaki last Thursday. Entering the straight he was quite five lengths behind First Acre, and Standard. Imt, putting in a great final dash, lie just got up in the last stride to dead heat. Although particularly well treated at the Auckland meeting, Rapine would have gone to RicoaTton for the

Great Autumn Handicap had a suitable rider been available. T res ham did not do well under trainer N. Cunningham, and, looked very poor on bis return to liis old quarters at Trentham. He has put on a Jot of condition of late, and may run well at Easter time.

It was expected, after his good showing in the. first race of the season, that Royal Divorce would be at his best before this, but he has not made the progress of late one would expect, and lie may not strike form before winter.

King’s Folly is reported to lie a great galloper in private, and even in some of his public essays has shown pace equal to winning in fair company. He is to go to Riccarton for the Great Easter Handicap, and those connected with the stable give him a. chance in the event.

Earlier in the. week it was stated in these columns that Fred Tilley’s “oastoff” Raukura was very fit. This she proved at the Masterton meeting last Thursday, where she beat a lot of useful “hacks.” This race should improve her, and she can be depended on to again race well at the Wairarapa meeting to be held at Easter time. High Pitch is a proved galloper, and those who profess to know say ho is a “rod in pickle” for the Auckland Easter. He heat a particularly good lot in the last Railway Handicap decided at Ellerslie, and must be partial to the right-handed course, as he won at the Avondale meeting held-at Ellerslie last September. With onlv 411> above the minimum, High Pitch should run well in the Easter Handicap. Only last week did we remark on the publicity given by northern writers to the visit of Gold Peak to Whangarei. We then .said that Gold Peak was a very moderate animal. Not only was the visit of the mare a disaster to bettors (she carried a lot- of money each day), hut her racing there caused the death of jockey E. Copestake. Looking nice and bright. Hynanna was made a very short “odds on” favourite for the Autumn Handicap at Opaki last Thursday. He was asked lo give his field an impossible start over the last furlong, and, although ho finished best of all. could only run a close third. This race should do llynanua good, in view of his St. Legcr engagement at Ellerslie. Joy King ran a great race lo finish a. close second 1 to Reremoana in the recently run Thompson Handicap. Over the last furlong. Joy King’s rider had some difficulty with his mount, who hung out, thereby hampering himself. Had he finished quite straight Reremoana’s task must have been ©veil harder. Joy King will meet Reremoana on only 41b better terms in the Auckland Easter, but the odds are lie will show most improvement since that race.

Apprentice rider L. Daly was present- at the Masterton meeting last Thursday, but did no riding. In fact his hands were heavily bandaged and he looked anything but well. On being asked the reason of this Daly stated that when riding recently the saddle “chafed” his legs, and the dye from a set of colours getting into the rash set up blood poisoning. He at first treated the incident lightly, and almost paid the penalty with his life. When trained at Ellerslie by J. Buchanan, as a two-year-old. Merry Damon showed great form in handicap events, and every indication of developing into a. great handicap performer, but while Merry Damon lias won oil rare occasions up north his form can be described as very disappointing. He was recently sent south to R. Hatch, and under his new trainer last Thursday won very easily at the first time of asking. Some appear to think that ' High Pitch will pot run out the mile of the Easter at Ellerslie. When a very young three-year-old (last September) High Pitch lieat a very lug field over a. seven furlong course, at Ellerslie in the good time of 1.27 2-5. With an additional .seven months on to his age, and the big advantage of good seasoning races. High Pitch should run a great race .in the coming Easter Handicap.

Cosmetic, who has not succeeded in winning ia. race for Mr. A’. Ritldiford since lie bought the filly last December for £IOOO, was engaged in the' Juvenile Handican at Masterton on Thursday She figured top-weight with 8.11, but though the distance 1 (five furlongs) was regarded as to her liking, she again disappointed her 'supporters. There are few two-year-old descendants of Martian aspiring for honours this season. However, one at least is expected to make lxis debate at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s forthcoming meeting at Riccarton. and much interest is attached to the character of the form lie will display, for his owner, Mr. J. Porter, with an eye to the future, decided on not racing him until the autumn. The Martian youngster, who is named Martarma, cost SOOgns. as a yearling, so that it may he guessed he was viewed in a favourable light at an early stage of his career. Marianna is engaged in, the 0.J.0. Champagne Stakes and Challenge Stakes.

Thracian, the full-brother to Heroic, is looked upon as a likely opponent to Limerick in the A.J.O. St. Logcr. Thracian ran second to Ram pi on in the V.R.C. Derby, heating Limerick on that occasion, fifiie son of Valais, will probably meet a very different Limerick at Rand wick next week. According to a Sydney writer, flic sum asked for the Auckland-owned gelding Stormy after he had registered a .'■•erics of wins at New South Wales meetings last spring was £2OO. which quicklv discouraged the would-be liuvAs Stormv is again on hand in New South Wales. much curiosity is evinced as to whether liis exnloits will Iw in keerjinsi Avi.tli -those -.vhieli mark ed Ids efforts* in the soring. FFTLD! NT! MKFTINf!. Owners a.nd trainers are reinimled that acceptances for a’l events in the Folding Jockey Club’s Easter meeting, on 161 li and 18th April, close on Monda v, 11th fust.
