ELTHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting' of the Eltham School Committee was held last evening. There were present: Messrs W. Ricketts (chairman), A. C. Sorenson, R, Kemn, J. Phillips, W. Horrocks, A Ware, \Y. W. Avery (secretary), and E. Barv (headmaster). HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster submitted his report on the work of the month as follows: The attendance for the quarter ending March 31 was 380.3, the average roll being 413.8. The average attendance for the quarter was 91.9 per cent. The result of the swimming carnival held on March 17 was generally satisfactory, and with the proceeds; footballs, basketball posts, rings, and balls had been purchased. Mr Ridling, senior agricultural instructor, visited the school during the past two days, and expressed liis satisfaction with the playground improvements and school surroundings. He wished the senior classes to enter upon outside experimental work, and the committee was requested to arrange for the preparation of the necessary area.
This being the last regular meeting of the committee prior to the annual meeting of householders in _ May, the staff conveyed its appreciation of the manner in 'which the committee had attended to the school’s requirements throughout the year. The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE.
The Director of the Division of Dental Hvgiene (Mr T. A. Hunter) advised that a dental nurse’s services for the Eltham school clinic would he available in a few weeks’ time. When a room in accordance with the department’s specifications was ready, dental equipment would be forwarded and ai definite date arranged for the dental nurse to commence her duties. When arrangements were made last year that the dental nurse for Eltham should go to New Plymouth for temporary duty it was not •anticipated that- the opening of the Eltham clinic would he so long delayed, and the department was very grateful to the Eltham committee for agreeing to the postponement, thus preventing the work at New Plymouth falling into arrears. GENERAL.
Tt was resolved that the Taranaki Education Board be asked to take steps for the erection of a. permanent fence in front of the new school. Mr Horrocks was appointed to arrange a working bee for the top-dress-ing of the school lawns. It was decided to procure the necessarv manure for top-dressing the football grounds, and that sowing operations lie carried out iinder the supervision of Mr J. Phillips. The secretary was deputed to arrange for tree-planting along the boundary fences, and the headmaster was authorised to deal with blackberry on the old school grounds.
Messrs Ricketts and Sorenson were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. Accounts amounting to £33 4n 3d were passed for payment.
