flic work of restoring the bells of the Preston (Lancashire) Town. Hail chime to their positions in the tower has been completed (says a correspondent), the massive hour bell being hoisted to and through the orifice in the west face of the clock after four hours’ careful manipulation. The operation was watched with great interest by a crowd of people, who were secretly thrilled with the thought of what sort of hole the bell would make in the pavement or street if the tackle were to give way! But these Job Trotters, who wanted to make their own flesh creep, had no satisfaction. The workmen knew their job; the bell safely climbed to and crept through the hole. This bell, like its baby brothers, by the way, has had to be re-cast in the end, anti all now bear the legend, “Cast 186(5; re-cast 1926.” The “rifling” of the bell has a gilt finish and is a wonderful piece of work.
