A WISH.
My little daughter said to me As wo were playing by the son, “if- wish that I could be a wave, For that lias never to behave. “It runs and plays along the sands, And pours its playthings on the land, Such lovely messy bits of weed— I wish I were a wave indeed. Or else 1 wish I were a gull— Those pretty birds are never dull; And yesterday, rocked on the sea. I saw a gull that called to me.” “It was a Princess sweet,’’ said I. “Of long ago or by and by, Who. when she will, throws off her wings. And comes to play with human things. ’ ’ A wave at first, and then a bird, And last a woman, on my word — ! You are all three, sc never crave Only to be a gull, or wave.
