PERSONAL ITEMS.

The new,® of the death of one of the most brilliant of lady students in New Zealand, Dr. Bella D. McCallum, will be learnt with deep regret by many in this district, for she was the widow of the late Captain Lance Jennings, brothere of Mr. A. L. Jennings, bf Fraser Road. Ajs Bella D. Cross, the late Mrs McCallum was well known to the students of Canterbury College from 1901 to 1910. She completed her B.A. degree in 190 S and then proceeded to the M.A. in Botany. -Soon afterwards she gained a Government research scholarship and remained at the college fosome time, preparing an elaborate repot oil the varieties of phormium, the New Zealand flax. Sh married Captain Jennings just before he went to the Great War, where lie was killed at the Somme in 1916. She later continued her studies, and completed her degree, D.Sc.. at the New Zealand University. After the war she went to Cambridge and Edinburgh, where she was for some time demonstrator to the medical and agricultural classes—the first woman to act as demonstrator at Edinburgh.. In 1919 she married Dr. McCallum, and in 1925 he was appointed to the very important position of Professor of Pathology at the University of Melbourne. Here Dr. and Mrs McCallum soon became general favourites with their colleagues and friends. These bright prospects have now been ended by her death, and New Zealand mourns the loss of a singularly brilliant, scholar and a charming and lovable woman.
