THE BUTTERFAT BONUS.
A RIGHT OR A GRATUITY. QUESTION BEFORE THE COURT. (by TELEGRAPH-PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCIHUROH, April S. An important test case involving in the aggregate thousands of pounds came before the' Hon. Mr. Justice Alpens in the Supreme Court to-day. The question interests all the dairy factories in Canterbury. It dealt with the payment of bonuses for butter-fiat, and raised- the point £vf whether suppliers are entitled to bonuses as a matter o* l ight, or whether bonuses are gratuities given by dairy companies. Walter Frederick Kerr, of Oxford, a farmer, originally sued the Avon Dairy Company for £l4 9s 7d, a balance which he claimed was due to him lor butterfat which he had .supplied to the comnany. The sum, by arrangement, was increased to £25 6s lOd to enable the case to come before the Supreme Court. (Proceeding.)
