HOCKEY.

TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Taranaki Hockey Association is as follows: — “The outstanding event of the year was the visit of the Indian Army team to the district. The match played at Eltham against the Taranaki representatives, created considerable public interest, and stimulated new life and energy amongst the various clubs and in hockey generally. The Taranaki team put up a very creditable performance against their well-trained and experienced opponents.

* ‘ The club fixtures were, on the whole, very satisfactory although some clubs failed to keep their appointments, which no doubt, detracted greatly from the continuity of interest by players and the general public. The very fine attendance that " witnessed the Indian Army, match proves that public interest and enjoyment is not wanting in hockey, and clubs generally should do everything possible to maintain, and even develop further, interest in the game, , ‘I/It is sincerely hoped that each town in Taranaki will have at least two senior teams for the coming season, and that hockey will continue to grow in public favour, as has been evident during the past year. “The seven-a-side tournament, held in conjunction with the ladies’ association, proved very popular, and a good number of teams competed, the competition being extremely keen. The Eltliam A team won the senior grade, and the Stratford B team the junior grade. “The financial position of the association is more satisfactory than for many years past. Your executive strongly recommends to the in-coming committee that energetic attention should be given to the encouragement of the game in all schools, and suggests the competitions should be arranged between the various senior classes.

“The association is greatly indebted to Mr. A. Jackson (secretary) for his untiring attention to the many affairs of the association during the year, especially in regard to the visit of the Indian Army team. ”

ELTHAAI COMBINED CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual general meeting of the Elthaiu Men’s and Ladies’ Hockey Club was held on Tuesday evening. Air C. J. Pennington presided over a small attendance. 1 'The report and balance-sheet dealing] with the men’s section was adopted. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit balance of 14s 6d. In presenting the report of the ladies’ branch, the chairman, said it was pleasing to record a very satisfactory state of affairs from the financial standpoint, due in a great measure to the success which attended the club’s “Popular Girl” Carnival. The, function had been continued for three! weeks under the able supervision of Mr 11. Nodder. Although the team succeeded in only a few matches last season, some very closely' contested games were played, and the team may fairly ho credited with good performances for a newly-formed organisation. A better knowledge of the fine points of the game, under efficient coaching, is anticipated for the ensuing season. Thanks are extended to members of the men’s section for their services as referees and instructors, to Messrs C. J. Pennington and H. Nodder, who have spared, no efforts to promote the

welfare of the club, and to the press. The balance-sheet of the ladies’ section showed; Receipts, £94 13s 7d, of which carnival returns (£SS 6s 3d) and dance receipts (£5 16s lOd) were the principal items; expenditure, £3O 12s 7d (social expenses accounting for £l2 19s 6d), leaving a. credit balance of £64 Is.
