A BRISBANE EPISODE. CROWD HALTS CAR. ESCAPE BY STRATEGY.. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 12.30 p.m. to-day. BRISBANE, April 7. While the Duke cf York was proceeding to visit some returned soldiers the police and military lost control of the crowd outside tlie entrance of a theatre as even the plunging police horses were unable to quell the people’s ardour. The Duke’s car was unable to proceed. The Duke sat there for tea minutes, while efforts were made to clear a path across the footpath, hut it was of no avail. Eventually, tlie car made as though to return to Government House, and jiroceeded by a circuitous route to the rear of the entrance hall. The Duke was thus enabled to keep his engagement.
A redeeming feature cf the unparal-lc-lled episode was that no effort was made actually to mob the car, or even to mount the running board. The police (used every decide in (their power, short of batoning the crowd, but were completely' powerless. The crowd, was composed" largely of women and girls, many of whom fainted. Others had to receive hospital treatment. The Duke left the theatre by the hack entrance, and made his return journey without incident. LABOUR LORD MAYOR
