WELLINGTON, April 6. Rosa Firth proceeded against George William Wood, a butcher, in the Supreme Court, seeking an order for £1 a week maintenance in respect of ail adopted child. A decree absolute between the parties was made in September. Since then both had remarried. His Honour Mr Justice Macgregor said the court had given custody of the child to the petitioner. He was satisfied that, the respondent had legal responsibilitv although the other husband woukl be liable if the child became destitute. It had been submitted that the petitioner and her husband were in such a good financial position that no order should be made against respondent, whom, it was said, was not in a position to pav. Respondent was doing a good business, and could evidently afford to pav £1 per week. Petitioner’s husband was unable to work, and the two Were not in a wealthy position.

The order asked for was made as from January 1. CRIME IN WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, April 6. Edward William King, a canvasser of Wellington, pleaded guilty before Mr Pago, S.M., to four charges of false pretences in respect of cheques presented to an Auckland publican and dishonoured. Counsel said restitution would be made if the accused were granted probation. Accused was remanded, and will be sentenced tomorrow. Three months in gaol was imposed on Ernest Hodge, alias Wilson, 32 years of age. He failed to account, to bis employers for £6 15s, collected while he was an advertising canvasser on n commission basis. He had been previously convicted of two charges in Auckland. A steward on the Middlesex, Frank Herbert Upton, aged 47 yeans, was remanded for sentence to-morrow on a charge of receiving a quantity of clothing and two handbags valued at £6 10s. The charges related to a cargo pillaging case in connection with which a number of men have been sent to prison.
