TARANAKI RACING. MEETING OF DISTRICT COMMITTEE. There were present at the ordinary meeting of the Taranaki District Committee last night: Messrs L. A. Nolan (chairman). G. Fraser. S. Rift, A. Good. Trl. "Washer, J. McLeod, and B. H. Chancy. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Gray and D. J. Malone. Approval was formally expressed of the Fourteenth Annual Stakes of the Taranaki Jockey Club, to ho run in February, 1928. It was decided that the conditions should be as last year; weight for age. 500 so vs. stakes. Licenses wore allowed and recommended as below: Jockeys’—S. J. Vincent and T. Tito, -subject to conditions. Apprentice’s—G. T. Todd.
The trustees recommended 1 an accident payment-, and this was- approved. Fines and report by the racecourse inspector in connection with the Opunako meeting wore approved.
MAN AAVA TU NOMINA TT 0 NS. Nominations for all events for the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting. to he hold on April 28 and 30. close on Friday' next, the Bth. NOTES- AND COMMENTS. (By “Maecenas.”) Considering the prize money' offering, the Alasferton Racing Club received splendid acceptances for their meeting, which takes place to-morrow. This gathering will be a good rehearsal for Easter meetings. No Favours and .Hokioi both ran excellent races in the i ligii-weight Handicap at the recent Wellington meeting, and for this reason should he well supported in the High-weight .Handicap at the Mas ter ton meeting to-morrow. Yalicare was a big odds-on favourite for the Rawson Stakes last Saturday, while backers of Limerick got a great price about the New Zealander. Besides Rapine and Reremoana, Commendation, and even Limerick may he runners in tlio Awapmii Gobi Cup at the end of the. month. If the club coul-d only bring together the four named wlial a great draw it would be.
A number of smart youngsters are engaged to-morrow in the two-year-old contest at Masterton, and tin' event looks open. Vigilance, Arrow Lml, and (’osmetic are a likely trio As a two-year-old .Jemidar on occasions raced well enough to suggest his developing into a fair periormer, hut so far this has not been realised, .lie may' show up well in the Telephone Hack Handicap to-morrow. Most opposition should come from ITyingrcat, who lias shown pace in his last couple of races.
The two races which Mircusonta had at Bulls should work some improvement, but First- Acre might beat Mireusonta in the Flying Handicap at Opaki to-morrow.
Bonhomnie did not gain a place at the recent meeting at- Bulls, but nevertheless he ran very prominently, and lie should satisfy his backers in the Stewards’ Handicap to-morrow, although Black Mint will be hard to dispose of on his 1 Thompson Handicap iorm.
The list of entries for the minor races at the autumn meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club suggests that the Auckland meeting is cutting the C.J.C. out with North Island owners. Heroic has been backed for the Sydney Cup to win a fortune, and his running in the event is of additional interest on account- of his winning total of stake money being second only to Gloaming. On Limerick’s great showing lasi Saturday lie is certain to trouble Heroic. When racing against, a lot of good two-year-olds at Trentliam last month, Mandarin showed a lot of speed, which augurs well for the Trial Stakes tomorrow.
Beaumont registered some good performances at Bulls recently, running a fust, second, and third in as many starts. If produced in the same form at the Masterton meeting to-morrow Beaumont will cause his opponents in the Autumn Handicap plenty of bother. Vertigern has run a number of good races at recent meetings, and although burdened with 9.1 in the Dash Handicapat the Alastcrton meeting should be capable of registering a good performance. Kil mezzo and Mol to are a pair that may give most trouble. The tragic and untimely death of E. Copestake at AYhangarei last Saturday has further depleted the- ranks of Dominion riders. A couple of years ago Copestake rode in great form, but a heavy fall at Ellcrslio caused concussion, and this left its mark, although up to the last Copestake was a courageous horseman.
Air. lAlcAlenemin lias framed what is termed a “Mattering” handicap for the Auckland Faster. Rapine lias got off with 9.7 (even allowing he is not at his best at a mile), while proved good performers in High Pitch, Oreum Aussie, and others are in at a pound or two above the minimum. A pair of good tlnee-yaer-olds in Alagna Chorea and Hynanna are handicapped at 7.11 and 8.1 respectively. Handicapped at 7st. (the minimum) for the Auckland Easter Handicap, Benzora has been treated as a palpable non-stayer. "While staying is not a strong point with Benzora, the fact remains that he won the Oroua- Hack Cup at Feilding last Easter, running the B.V furlongs with 8.5 to win very easily* in 1.48 1-5. This works out at about 1.-10* for the mile, and was the best gallop of the meeting ou what could not lie termed a fast course. Seeing that the Easter Handicap at Kllerslio is run over what can be described as an easy mile, Reremoana, at 10.2, is well in, as there is no mile race decided in the Dominion more
easy to accomplish, as the iirst halt of the journey is on a down grade (lienee the fast limes recorded there). In the same race last year lie won under 9.11. and lias since won the Ormond Gold Cup, run over a mile course in fast time, added to which are bis recent brilliant victories in the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui and the Thompson Handicap, with 9.8 in the saddle, run in 1.37 f. 'Hus was a great; performance., and the tact, that 11 ereruoana gave a good three-year-old like ,Juy King (whose trainer thought him unheal able) 281 b and a six lengths start- into the straight, was proof positive Dial the llnwera-irained gelding was back to bis best. IT landed at the post for the Faster Handicap in the same condition, and provided lie has average luck in the running, Reremonna has been given an excellent chance to win three Faster Handicaps in succession.
Considering that Yalicare is considered to he the best “iniler” in Australasia by many Australians who profess to be expert judges of form, her defeat by Limerick over the nine furlongs of the Rawson Stakes would be
vcrv unpalatable to lioi - admirers. All ..-on'il unbiassed judges agree that but j'.„ r vcrv bad interference by \ alicaro, Limerick would have beaten all the Australian “cracks” in the Cra\en Plate at Bandtviek in the spring, tor al’tei' Yalieure had collided with Limerick, lie then suffered defeat., by a nose, Windbag being his conqueror. As T imeriok has not had a race m public since the first week in November, his success in last Saturday’s Law son Stakes can be classed as a great performance. Obviously in Limerick and Commendation (both by Limoncl) Ne\t Zealand possesses three-year-olds oi verv hich standard, who at their best are lit tie. if .anything, inferior to even Australia’s best (Lampion).
