HON. O. J. HAWKEN.
TOUR OF CANTERBURY. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.). ASHBURTON, April 5. The Hon. 0. J. Hawken arrived here to-uav at the invitation of the midCanterbury executive of the Fanners’ Union and A. and P. Association, to inspect the wheat-growing areas of the country. In the morning, he inspected the experimental farm. In the afternoon he addressed a large meeting of farmers on the wheat question. The speech was much on the lines’ of the Premier’s recent statements at Tiinaru and Christchurch, adding that notice of intention to impose a dutj' would be given to Australia within a day or two.
Referring to dairy produce, N Mr. Hawken defended control. The Minister tours the countrj r tomorrow, returning to Wellington in the evening.
