Mr and Mrs F. H. Williams, of Wellington, accompanied by a friend, who are on the latter stages of a motor tour of the North Island, stayed at the White Hart Hotel last evening. Mr Walter Syme left by mail train this morning on a visit to Wellington. He expects to return to Hawera on Saturday evening. Mr Gardiner, one of the .senior inspectors of the Department of Health, accompanied by Miss Lambie, of the same department, is at present on an official visit to Hawera. During the several days they intend to remain in town they will he located at the White Hart Hotel. At a meeting of the Hawera Bowling Club last- evening, the members, standing, passed resolutions of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs James Winks and Mr A. W. Cunnabell. At the annual meeting of the City Football Club last evening, a vote of condolence with the relations of the late Mr. W. Bryant, was passed. The annual repeat referred to him as an enthusiastic playing member of the cdub. The appointment of Mr R. J. Barrett, bailiff at the Hawera Magistrate’s Court, as maintenance officer at Hawera has been gazetted. Following a new departure recently adopted with success in the cities, maintenance officers have been appointed in a number of the smaller districts. Their duties are to watch maintenance proceedings, and take action in the event of arrears accruing. The friends of Mr and Mrs T. Innes, of Okaiawa, will deeply regret to learn of the death, after a very short illness, of their son Gordon, at the age of 5) years. He had been suffering from whooping cough, and a relapse took place on Sunday night. He was brought to Hawera. on Monday morning, but, despite all that medical skill and care could do. he passed away last night. Sincere sympathy will be felt with the family and relatives in their sorrow. He was a particularly bright hoy, and was very popular with his school fellow's.

Air W. Bicheno, who for the past six years wa.s first assistant at the Eltham- school, and who is at present headmaster of the Auroa- school, was vesterday entertained at afternoon tea by the staff of the Eltham school and presented with a memento of their esteem. Air E. Bary, headmaster, in making the presentation, referred to the excellent- work of Air Bicheno whileat the Eltham -school, particularly with regard to games and sport. Air Bicheno briefly thanked the staff for the gift and the expression of goodwill.

At the fortnightly meeting of Hawera Lodge No. 16, U.A.0.D., opportunity was taken to- present D.P. Bro. W. A. IX Adams with a P.D.P. collar and framed diploma. P.D.P. Bro. M. F. Purser, who made the presentation referred to the good work performed by Bro. Adams during the nine years in which he had held office. The large increase in membership, wdiich now stood at 324, was in no small measure due to his untiring efforts. He also -asked Bro. Adams to accept a framed enlarged photograph of past and present officers of the lodge. Secretary Bro. AY. Harvey also- eulogised the good work of Bro. Adams, who suitably replied. There passed away in Wanganui during last week one of the oldest pioneers of this coast, Air Alfred John Symes, who was born at Haydon J-odge, iAlendip Hills, England, in 1848. In 1857, when a lad of eight, he arrived with his parents- in New Plymouth, where his father, the late Air Francis Symes, farmed, until 1864. Their home was then burned by the- Maoris, and tlie family came to AVanganui and lived at Warrengate. The- late Air Alfred Syin.-s. who was educated at Nelson College saw service in the Maori AVar, for which he -received the New Zealand war medal. For 27 years (says the AVanganui “Chronicle”) he was a- member of the old Alexandra Cavalry, being one of the. original members and the first one to. receive the 20 years’ volunteer lone service medal. He was also one of the- original fifty foundation members or the St. Andrew Kilwinning Masonic Lodge. AVanganui.
