Sir William le Fleming and Miss te Fleming, who have been making an extensive tour of the South Island, were passengers from Wellington by the mail train last evening. Mr. and Mrs W. G. Lee., who arrived from the Auckland district last evening to take up residence at Hawera, are :ab present staying at the Central Hotel. Mr. T. Bigg, M.Sc., M.A., the agricultural chemist at the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, will leave for America iater on in the month to represent the institute at the big scientinc congress to be held'there shortly. Miss H. W. Blackie, instructress .in physical training to the staff of primary schools, arrived in Hawera last evening and is staying at the Egmont Hotel. Mr. W. J. Linkhorn, of Hawera, was taken ill suddenly on Wednesday, and was ordered to the CVaighchn private hospital, where -lie was operated upon shortly after his admission. He was reported to-day to be making satisfactory progress. Mr. M. Brown, who for several years has been engaged in the office ot Messrs Duffill and Gibson, architects of Hawera, left by the south express this morning for Wellington, where he has received an appointment on the staff of Messrs Aitken and Matches Among other .recreational activities, Mi Brown has been prominent as -an official of the Hawera Swimming Club; evidence of his popularity -being given by a group of followers of the isport who gathered at the station to extend good luck wishes, and raised a rousing cheer as the train steamed out. The news of the death, at- Blenheim, of Mr. A. H. Atkinson will have been read by many older residents of the town with much sorrow, because Mr. Atkinson—he was known to his friends as “Sid” and was very popular—was from 1899 to 1902 manager of the Hawera Gas Company. It- is worth notice that his brothers' -also later occupied this position. His father was one of the best known gas engineers in the Dominion. The deceased was later at Paeroa, Pahiatua, Whangarei. and in 1919 was appointed to the Blen heim G-a® Company. _ He did excellent work for that town in modernising tin plant, and putting it in. -a good pcs; tion. He leaves a widow and four children, two boys and two- girls, to whom will be extended sympathy from many friends in the Hawera district.

Appreciative reference to the excellent results achieved by Nurse W. L. Whittington at tlije Hawera school dental clinic, sine© its establishment a year ago, was made yesterday, when members of the coinmitte met the nurse at afternoon tea for the purpose of bidding llier farewell, and to welcome her successor, Nurse date. The gathering was held at the residence of Dr. W. M. Thomson, a member of the committee. It was attended by the majority of the members; the headmaster, Mr E. A. Dates, and Mr, H. \\\ Swinbii in, on behalf of the local dentists, Mr. J. W. Harding, chairman of the committee, eulogised the work of Nurse Whittington, and voiced llie regret felt- by the committee at her departure. She had become very popular with the children aiul had paved the way for the present dental work being done at the Hawera school. On behalf of the committee he presented Nurse Whittington with a gold pencil, and expressed his best wishes for her future success.. He welcomed Nurse Cato. Mr. Swinburn also expressed appreciation of Nurse Whittington's work, and assured her successor of the dentists’ hearty cooperation. Other speakers were Dr. Thomson and Mr. Bates. Nurse Whittington leaves Hawera. on Monday to commence her duties at the Napier clinic. Nurse Cato was previously engaged at the Temuka school clinic.
