CANTERBURY WHEAT LANDS.
A WONDERFUL YIEiLD. During the course of a trip round 1 part of the South Island Air \Y. J. Linkhorn, of Hawcra, was taken from Christchurch .round a good deal of the outskirts of the mountains and thence south and hack through Waiapoi. It was all one expanse of wheat country in whatever direction he -looked and such, quality as he had rarely seen before. Farmers acknowledge that the heads of the wheat- are exceptionally large and well grown, and that the area down in wheat- is wider than usual and such that there are likely to he ample supplies-, -sufficient; for all requirements without importing, lie- .saw five threshing mills hard at work and another moving along the highway and .ail 1 were in one district going til top—a record yield for a number of years. Speaking of the farmers’ methods, Air. Linkhorn said that no soner was a paddock harvested than the land was
prepared for the next crop. It lay fallow for a time, hut they were careful to get it clean and well-worked s<> to get the next crop early, and under the best conditions. _ .... He was too enthusiastic in his approval of the methods of the milling companies, especially in Auckland where lie had an opportunity of seeing a lot of the work done. He said it was striking the care taken to get the Hour perfectly clean, being worked and worked till every possible particle of dust was eliminated. _ Up there the big mills were running twenty-foui hours, working three shifts, to cope with the demand. Altogether, said Mr. Liiikhorn, the position of the wheat harvest looked exceedingly promising.
