TARANAKI FIRE BRIGADES.
CONFERENCE AT STRATFORD. FIFTEENTH ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the executive and delegates of the Taranaki District United Eire Brigades’ Association was held at Stratford last evening. The chair was occupied by Secretary Aitken (president of the association). There was a full attendance of the executive. Tli. following delegates were also present :—Superintendent Boon (New Plymouth), Li miner (Waitara), Crossman (Inglewood), Deputy Murray (Eltham), Foremen Wi'Js (Patea) and Hurley (Hawera), Custodian Brocklebank (Stratford), Secretaries Burroughs (Eltham) and Vincent (Manaia), and Fireman Hawke (ICaponga). In presenting the fifteenth annual report. the executive said it was pleased to record a satisfactory financial position. The total of assets over liabilities amounted to £27 14s 6d. Meetings had been held during the year, at which a considerable vo'urne of business was dealt with. Associated brigades were already in possession of the particulars of the business, transacted at the June meeting of the executive. The extension of the boundary would be brought up for discussion; as would also a remit from the- Eiltham Brigade dealing with the standardisation of money offered for competition at future demonstrations, and one from the executive in connection with the issue of complimentary tickets or invitations to firemen for the various fire brigades’ annual balls held in the Taranaki district. Invitations were received from the Hawera and Stratford brigades in respect of this year’s conference and demonstration, the ensuing ballot by associated brigades favouring Stratford. Congratulations were extended to the latter brigade in securing the function for their t-own. and it was hoped that the demonstration would be in everv way a success. It would be .necessary to determine the venue of onlv the conference for 1928. and if more than one invitation were received a ballot would be taken. A gratifying feature of this year’s demonstration was the great number of competing teams which entered, every associated brigade being represented. The report stated that gold stars for 9*5 years’ service bad been presented to Superintendent T. Grubb (Stratford). ■<vi<] to Firemen AV. AY:*v and ,T. Clarke tX ew Plymouth), to whom the felicitaof the evocative were heartily offer'd.
Tli association recorded appreciation of tlm action of the N.Z.U.F.B.A. in • ranting n subsidy of £35 towards the demonstration expenses. FIREMAN’S DEATH ON DUTY. The report continued: “Afi&ry sincere regret is expressed at the death of Fireman A. Allen (New Plymouth). The late fireman met his death whilst on duty at a fire. The sympathy of the whole association goes out to the relatives of the deceased and to the New Plymouth Brigade.” Continuing, the report thanked the secretaries of brigades for their promptness in the payment of annual .subscriptions. Til thanking officers and members of various brigades for their co-operation during the past year, the executive trusts that its. efforts in the. interests of the association were approved. The report was adopted. COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS. Considerable discussion took place on the issue of invitations and complimentary tickets for brigade balls. A succession of motions and amendments, with a view to determining the number of favours issued to any fireman were put to the vote, but nothing definite was decided, and the question w:i« .set, aside for future consideration. PRIZE LIMIT. A remit from the Eltham Brigade, asking that the amount of prize money offered at future demonstrations be standardised appeared to have originated through a misconception of an existing provision in the United Fire Brigades’ Association rules. Superintendent A. Morrison (Hawera) explained that £lO5 is the limit of prize money allowed by the association for competition at any demonstration. but any brigade to whom the conduct of a demonstration is assigned may offer a less sum if its finances will not permit- the paying out of £lO5. With the consent of the conference, the Eltham representatives withdrew tlie remit.
