DAIRY CATTLE SHOW.
GOOD DISPLAY AT OTAKEHO. As at> each of the. eight shows of dairy cattle held -under the auspices of the Farmers’ Union, Otakeho branch, there was on Saturday a capital array of dairy cattle entered for the 1927 show, held on Mr F«. T. Burke’s paddock. The arrangements for holding the stock for the judging ring were .such as would do credit to any A. and P. show, and the preliminary details necessary were carried through expeditiously and efficiently under the direction of the president and committee of management. . . The facilities for judging—an excellent ring well roped off close to the pens so that animals were quick y brought in at one side and taken away at the other —were complete, and the award boards showing a complete liSu of events with awards as made, the list of entries and the prize-winners in the class as taken were very convenient and - gave the spectators all possit»' particulars as the .show proceeded. For this the society is indebted very much to the good work of the secretary. Mr H. R. Wood, who put in a lot'of hard and useful work. The stewards assisting iin the> various classes were Messrs J. E. Young (vice-president), E. Davison, John Daley, A. Laurie, J Campbell, A. C. Walker. E. Hen wood, R J. Byrne, C. A. Bourke, E. 11. Putt. H George H. le Fleming, A..Ha.stie, J. D Bashford, T. The six entries in that class were good useful animals, and the owners were complimented by the the afternoon sheep judging and stepping the chain competitions were held, and attracted a lot of mterIt was unfortunate that rain fed' l , during the afternoon, and this somewhat debited proceedings, but despite tins, and' the fact that judging was somewhat late in starting, it was finished in pood time. . Before concluding, Mr E. T. Buirke thanked the judges for the work done by them and the assistance rendered. He also thanked Mr Griffiths for Ins able and careful demonstrations winch were very Vciluflble to «v'»l present, and enabled the Farmers’ Union to carry on the' good work don? for a number of years. Special' y was bo pleased to see Mr H. Hodge present. On behalf of the committee, he heartily thanked the ladies and the press for assistance given. In reply. Mr Griffiths .said he considered it a compliment to be asked to judge, and if liis remarks had been helpful he was more than p'eased. He considered the farmers owed a lpt_ to the branch of the union for organising these shows, which gave the farmers an opportunity to get together and discuss matters of common interest. There were many good classes, but one which earned great commendation was that for children’s calves, in which no less than seventeen paraded, all nice little animals. Two were lea by tiny children of about three years old, Alice' Davison and Claire Nicolson, children of two of the exhibitors. The complete, list of awards is as below : A"=d bull. —J. D. The judge said they were all fine bulls, with little between first and second. The first excelled in head, eye, and muzzle, and was a little ahead in body conformation. The second was better finished at the tail end, and in depth and heart 100 m. it was id bettor condition, but a trifle inclined to be hammy. The third had a good head, fine depth, and good skin.
